Cave-In-Rock Switchgrass is a native, warm-season perennial grass selected for strong establishment, upright growth, and long-term persistence. It typically reaches 5–6 feet in height, forming dense stands that provide excellent screening, bedding cover, and edge structure for wildlife. Known for its adaptability and tolerance to a wide range of soils, Cave-In-Rock Switchgrass is a dependable, low-maintenance option for land managers building durable cover and conservation plantings.
Best Uses:
• Visual screening and travel corridor concealment
• Bedding and security cover
• Field edges, borders, and windbreaks
• Conservation and erosion control
Seeding Rate:
• Pure Stand: drill 6-7 lbs. or broadcast 8-10 lbs. per acre
• Mixed Stand: drill 3-4 lbs. or broadcast 5-6 lbs. per acre
Planting Timing:
• Late spring to early summer once soil temperatures reach 60°F+
Planting Depth:
• ¼ inch or less (do not plant deep)
Establishment Notes:
• Establishes slightly faster than many switchgrass varieties
• Full stand performance typically achieved in years 2–3
• Minimal fertility required once established
